Abstract

Students learn how to regulate their emotions when their teachers act as role models during class. In addition to Emotional Intelligence, there are three dimensions of emotional intelligence: emotional competency, Emotional Maturity, and Emotional Sensitivity. Relationships, Physical Health, Mental Health, and Performance at Work are all influenced by emotional intelligence. Teachers in the 21st century must be able to display good intellectual, moral, emotional, and social development themselves and promote the same in their students. The role of a teacher in education is crucial. The child is at the centre of education today, but the child's education cannot be successful without the teacher. During interactions with others, a person with emotional intelligence adopts a broader perspective, which helps them understand the social environment.

Introduction

Expression, management, and control of one's own and other people's emotions are all aspects of emotional intelligence. Teaching is a highly emotional profession that requires emotional labor, emotional relationships, and emotional understanding. Teachers must value their relationships with their students on an emotional level and teach them to be social and emotional beings. A teacher plays a crucial role in the educational system. Having a high level of emotional intelligence is necessary for teaching.

The multitude of negative emotions that come with intelligence drain a lot of energy, reduce self-worth, cause absenteeism, and prevent teams from working together. However, when dealing with various sources of stress at school, teachers with high emotional intelligence employ more constructive, well-adapted coping strategies and report feeling more fulfilled by their work.

The ability to recognize, comprehends, and controls one's thoughts, feelings, and actions are known as emotional intelligence. It shapes our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. Emotional intelligence determines how and what to learn. Due to the close relationship between emotional intelligence and how people relate to one another, it facilitates the setting of priorities and controls the majority of daily actions. According to Coleman (1995), emotional intelligence is the capacity to manage emotions both within oneself and within a relationship effectively. It also includes the capacity to motivate one and others.

Aim of study

1. To understand how teachers may help kids improve their emotional intelligence.

2. To comprehend the significance of teachers in fostering children's emotional intelligence.

Review of Literature

In recent years, more and more experts have investigated the significance of emotional intelligence. Teachers' emotional competence is often associated with their ability to organize the educational process successfully (Petrides et al., 2016). There is a study that examines the relationship between teachers' emotional intelligence and classroom discipline management (Valente et al., 2019). A teacher who is emotionally intelligent has greater discipline management skills, according to the authors of that study. The teacher who possesses emotional perception and expression skills is able to read the emotional state of his or her students and adapt their behavior accordingly. In this way, they can adjust the activity within the class to motivate the students when they realize that they are demotivated. According to another study (Valente et al., 2020), emotional intelligence ability and teacher efficacy are fundamental characteristics of an effective teacher. Consequently, teachers should possess sensitivity and knowledge about how to optimize interpersonal relationships with their students as teaching is an activity that causes significant emotional workload. Again, it emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence among teachers. A teacher's efficacy is defined as their ability to engage students, regardless of their difficulties or indifference (Valente et al., 2020). The study "Emotional intelligence and job performance of high school female teachers" (Latif et al., 2017) addressed a related issue. The authors discovered that, in addition to other abilities and qualities, emotional intelligence is a critical predictor of potential work performance. According to other studies, emotional intelligence shields instructors from experiencing emotional stress (Larina, 2017). Therefore, seasoned university instructors will prefer to develop harmonious relationships with their students and themselves, plan the class well, and better understand themselves (Mérida-López and Extremera, 2017).

Of sure, everyone needs to have emotional intelligence. Scientists have shown that emotional reactions take precedence over cognitive ones, thus it's critical to comprehend and properly interpret one's emotional states. A person who possesses this skill will be better able to make wise choices, understand themselves, and lessen the impact of unfavourable circumstances (Sangeetha, 2017). At the same time, acknowledging one's own emotions helps one comprehend the ideas and behaviors of others better (Edannur, 2010). A person with high emotional intelligence is able to establish friendly rapport and successful communication with others.

Need for Emotional Intelligence

The past few years have seen a rise in acceptance of the idea that a person's level of intelligence, or "intelligence quotient," as evidenced by their academic achievements, exam success, grade received, etc., is a critical component of success in life or at work.  However, current research on emotional intelligence has shown that EQ is the most significant factor in predicting both personal and professional success. The ability to manage one's relationships with one's environment effectively and successfully depends on one's ability to manage their emotions, which includes being aware of their emotions, evaluating the knowledge associated with those emotions, and drawing on that knowledge when solving problems. By assessing intelligence in ways other than what is typically measured in a test, emotional intelligence seeks to deepen our understanding of it. Our understanding of our interactions with others and the social environment outside of us is expanded thanks to emotional intelligence.

Dimensions of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence has three dimensions: i) Emotional competency; ii) Emotional maturity; and iii) Emotional Sensitivity. They are all interdependent on one another. 

i. Emotional Competency

Emotional competence includes the ability to fully respond to emotional stimuli elicited by various situations, having high self-esteem and optimism, communicating, handling emotional upsets like frustration, conflicts, and inferiority complexes, enjoying emotions, doing what succeeds, being able to relate to others, emotional self-control, the capacity to avoid emotional exhaustion such as stress burnout, and learning to avoid the negative effects of emotional handling egoism.

ii. Emotional Maturity

It involves assessing one's own and other people's emotions, recognizing and expressing feelings, balancing heart and mind, being adaptable and flexible, appreciating another person's viewpoint, and teaching others to put off getting immediate psychological gratification.

iii. Emotional Sensitivity

It entails being aware of one's emotional arousal threshold, controlling one's immediate surroundings, maintaining goodwill, harmony, and comfort with others, and allowing others to feel at ease in one's presence.  Along with being truthful in interpersonal interactions, accurately interpreting emotional cues, realizing that emotions, moods, and feelings are communicable, and developing an understanding of how other people perceive and interact with us, it also entails being honest.

Impacts of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence affects i) Performance at Work, ii) Physical Health, iii) Mental Health, and iv) Relationships. They are given below in detail.

i. Performance at work

Emotional intelligence can be used to facilitate leadership, motivation, career success, and navigating the social complexities of the workplace. Actually, many businesses now consider EQ testing to be a prerequisite for employment and view it as just as important for evaluating job candidates as technical skills.

ii. Physical health

Stress can have a serious negative impact on our health if it is not properly managed. Unchecked stress can cause a number of negative health effects, including high blood pressure, immune system suppression, an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, infertility, and accelerated ageing. Learning stress management techniques is the first step in enhancing emotional intelligence.

iii. Mental health

Stress that is not under control can have an adverse effect on mental health, leaving it open to depression and anxiety. We will also be more prone to mood swings if we are unable to recognize and control our emotions, and our inability to build solid relationships can make us feel isolated and depressed.

iv. Relationships

We can better express our feelings and comprehend those of others if we have a better understanding of emotions and how to control them. As a result, relationships can be strengthened both personally and professionally, and communication can be improved.

Importance of Emotional Intelligence for Teachers

Teachers have a significant impact on their students' educational outcomes. Teachers set an example for students on how to manage their emotions in a healthy way in the classroom. An educator's teaching style may be strongly influenced by how their emotions affect their students. Teachers of today should be able to model good intellectual, moral, emotional, and social development and be able to encourage students to do the same. The teacher also appears to be a dynamic educational agent who works with coworkers and students' families to carry out a variety of tasks, including mediation, innovation, management, research, assessment, and guidance, in addition to the duties associated with planning and teaching. Therefore, the teacher is designated as the primary axis of the educational community.

Significant Role of Teachers in Molding Emotional Intelligence

It is important to study the level of Emotional Intelligence of teachers who influence the behavior of students. Emotional Intelligence is totally dependent on the environment. It is related neither to the development of some organs nor to physiology. Emotional intelligence is a new approach to teaching; this approach embraces the learner and learning in a more complete way than traditional schooling. Quality emotions and feelings help teachers reach their full potential in the classroom.

Role of Teachers in Promoting Emotional Intelligence

Teaching is the profession that shapes education. It is the essential profession that makes all other professions possible: well-qualified, caring, and committed. Teachers will improve curricula, assessments, a safe school, and the highest standards in the world. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize emotions and their relationships, reason them out, and solve problems. Teachers' goal is to provide an atmosphere where flow occurs easily and students are totally engaged in learning.  Here, teaching plays a vital role in developing emotional intelligence among students. Professional success primarily depends upon the combination of the world's two intelligences: intelligence and skills. Professionalism demands teachers to be innovative in their attitude, flexible in their approach, and constantly refresh themselves with the day-to-day developments in their subject area. At the same time, they should be capable of recognizing the value of human potential, understanding the diverse needs of learners, and providing an enriching environment for their growth. In essence, the dream of learning society becomes real only when the teachers are well equipped with moral, professional, emotional, intellectual, practical, and communication skills. Therefore, teachers must make all possible efforts to promote emotional intelligence among their adolescent students. The teacher has to create an emotional atmosphere in the classroom.

Conclusion

 Teachers play a very important role in a student's life. To a great extent, it is the teachers who decide the shape a student's life will take. So it is very necessary to be adequately equipped with resources that will make the teacher a perfect role model for the students. Today's teachers should be able to demonstrate good intellectual, moral, emotional, and social development and promote the same among the students. In addition to this, teachers know how to work with the entire educational community. Teachers also appear as dynamic educational agents. Together with one's colleagues and student families, they perform not only the tasks of preparing and executing the teaching functions but also those of innovation, management, research, assessment, and guidance. The teacher of the world is the maker of the world's future. It means that the Teacher is the maker of the rules of the Nation.
